Community of Microbes lets you explore a colorful world of tiny living creatures in a variety of familiar and unfamiliar environments. While designed to be a companion to the Community of Microbes exhibit, this app can also be used at home.

Open the app, point the camera at one of the special Community of Microbes images at the exhibit or on computer or tablet screen and see a captivating 3D animation appear before your eyes using augmented reality (AR) technology!

There’s more to life than meets the naked eye — we are surrounded by a diverse and vibrant ecosystem of microscopic organisms. These creatures live in, on, and around us, shaping our environment in profound and often unseen ways.

From microbes in our dust that create life-saving pharmaceuticals to others that make squid glow and beer taste good, we interact with our tiny neighbors every day, even if we don’t know it.

Community of Microbes was created by multidisciplinary artist Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya in partnership with microbiologist Dr. Anne Madden. The project is supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
